For my 24th birthday all I wanted to do was be alone, and I woke up in the morning and putting a new book in my bag I took the bus to the middle of the city, and sat alone in a cafe, and read it. I spent the evening with family and then some friends, mostly because they insisted I do.
I spent my 26th birthday wandering around the streets of Beijing alone. I was staying with friends for a week and they were working, so they were lovely and treated me to breakfast in the morning before work. Then I took the day to get lost in the city and getting squished on the Beijing subway. At night I spent the night at a popular Beijing expat bar, run by a friend of one of my cousin's. He treated me to a lot of Screwdrivers while I ranted to strangers about how much I loved China. A good friend reminded me of an e-mail I'd sent him during that time and I mentioned how spending the day by myself in a new big city was the greatest way to turn 26.
For my 30th, I thought I would be in a totally different city to do more wandering. Instead I'll be spending it in downtown Montreal again. As long as I'm in the city though, I'll be content.
I took a personality quiz the other day (I'm a narcissist) and apparently I'm a dreamy idealist. But the evidence shows that I'm an introverted city girl.
I hope 'y'all appreciate this throwback...
