I applied for the Creative Writing Program and got in. When I turned 21 I finally attended my first official creative writing seminar. I was super nervous. My class was filled with people much more interesting than me (one girl had hitchhiked across Canada!). But eventually I found my place, which was easy to do because once a week our evening seminars were typically followed by trips to the bar afterwards. Our Tuesday evenings were spent complimenting each other on our brilliance, followed by more compliments and rants at Reggies. Class was Tuesday and Thursday night. We were too cool for Thursdays.
I discovered some hidden gems that semester. Montreal is filled with great bars and even better artistic communities. It was hard to learn all of this living in the West-Island, working in the West-Island, and spending Friday nights and sometimes Saturday evenings at one of the only bars in the West-Island.
I don't know how much I've learnt about my writing since that first class almost nine years ago. But I've written a lot of things and travelled to a lot of places. I'm hoping all of that can come together, someday.
